Rules and Behavior

Is pranking allowed?

What constitutes a “prank” vs griefing is on the recipient. Avoid doing anything you don’t know the other person will be OK with.

What clients / mods are allowed?

We only ban egregious hack clients such as for x ray or flying. You are allowed to use client side mods for performance, QoL (ex. sorting inventory or swapping items), even map/minimap mods and litematica. If you are unsure whether something qualifies as cheating, we encourage you to ask before proceeding.

Can I use a cracked client such as TLauncher?

No

Technical / Gameplay

Is the server for Java or Bedrock?

For out SMP and Creative worlds, you can play on both! They are Java servers with plugins (Geyser and Floodgate) that allow Bedrock players to join and play seamlessly so you can play from any device that supports crossplay (even the Switch, with extra steps). However, do expect all game mechanics (ex. redstone) to function as in Java.

What plugins does the server use?

You can find a list of some plugins, with descriptions and explanations for use at the plugins page. A full list will be made available in the future.

Why is the server lagging?

There are several types of what people would commonly call “lag”, here is how you can identify what it is and how to fix it (if you are technical enough to know its a server side issue just report it to @Server VP with details):

  1. Low fps or stuttering. The video on the screen is a sequence of images, each of which take some time for the computer to process. You can see your current FPS (frames per second) in the F3 screen. A low FPS counter, or frequent dips to low values (stutter) are indicative of this issue. This is caused by your computer struggling to process everything that is happening in the game. First, check that there are no other heavy apps running on your computer with Task Manager. IF you are sure the issue is on the server (ex. Only in a specific spot) you can report this to the admin team (specifically @Server VP) and we will investigate.
  2. High ping or inconsistent connection. This will include frequent disconnects (often with the message “timed out”), delay when placing or breaking blocks or interacting with items. This is most likely caused by your connection (such as bad Wi-Fi) and there is nothing we can do about it.
  3. Low server tick rate. The shortest unit of time in minecraft is a “tick” and should take exactly 1/20 of a second, but can take longer if there is lots happening on the server (such as lots of entities or new chunks being generated). This can be hard to tell from connection lag for an individual player, but will affect all players the same, and slow down everything in the world, such as moving entities or even the time of day. This is an issue on our end and should be reported to @Server VP immediately.

Verification and Membership

How long does it take to get verified?

We try for the same day but if it takes a while and you want to play right away just ping @Execs on our Discord server, we don't mind.

Can I join the server if I’m not a University of Alberta student?

Yes, but if you are not from another Edmonton-based university or college, you need a University of Alberta student who is a verified member of the club to vouch for you.

Is this club a high-commitment club?

Nope! You can play as casually or as intently as you want. We want you to have fun!

Are there in-person meetups?

Yes! Although we are mostly based online, we do have monthly meetings where we do updates on the server and hang out with our online friends in person! The meetups usually happen once a month during the school year, on campus.

What is the cost of membership?

We do not have any membership fees for participating in the club. If you want to play on the servers, you must have purchased Minecraft on a supported platform (which is most of them). You can donate to help keep the club running, and donations over $5 get you the VIP status, which comes with some cosmetic perks.
